The Ordinal Directions explores Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, NY. Shot over a period of a year, the video reflects an intersubjectivity that permeates the park like a weightless, invisible cloud. The flow of time and space - not the central conflict of conventional narrative and documentary practice- provide the piece’s forward momentum through a cascade of stories and encounters with others. Two thoughts may illuminate the films philosophical underpinnings: Jean-Luc Nancy's proposal that 'being is always being with'; and Levinas' philosophy based on the encounter with another person as a primary experience: the other is knowable, yet unknowable; not able to be constructed as an object.
